You know, those joints that do the all-important job of connecting your arm to your trunk?
Did you know that your shoulder joint (or, for the body nerds out there, the glenohumeral joint) is the most mobile joint in your entire body? Yep. They can move in ways + directions that even your hips (and you know your hips don’t lie, right?) can’t gyrate. Neat, huh?
BUT, here’s the kicker, it’s also the least stable joint in your entire body. Which means, as we like to say in Yoga Tune Up®, it’s a very common “body blind spot” – an area in your body that’s overused, underused, misused or abused…by LIFE.
Trust me. I would know. I dislocated both of my shoulders as a little girl overzealously swinging from the monkey bars.
So, why am I bothering to tell you this?
Because whether you’re simply balancing, thrusting or swinging any mass at all overhead (think weight plate, kettle bell or barbell), if you’re shoulder mobility is shot and your shoulder stability is ‘out to lunch’, then, unfortunately, you’re going to end up:
- shredding through the ligaments, tendons and surrounding tissues
- compensating the integrity of other structures, like for instance your lower back (usually a combo of hyperextension + compression in this case), in order to mask shoulder immobility and instability
- having recurring injuries and chronic pain + movement issues
Ummm, no thanks! Sitting on the sidelines because my I tore my rotator cuff (again)? Not for me.
I don’t know about you, but at the core, the reasons I show up for my athletic endeavors, be they Crossfit or any other form of movement, is because I love it. And, I want to keep lifting, and running, and yoga-ing until the day I drop dead. I wager, you likely feel the same way.
And to be able to do that, to be able to age dynamically with our shoulders intact and still able to help us pull, push, lift, throw and everything else in between, we’ve GOT to:
- Assess the way our shoulders move
- Correct the way our shoulders move
- and, Upgrade the way our shoulders move
Which, is exactly how I’m going to teach you to bulletproof your shoulders in this workshop.
I’m bringin’ out the big guns here – skeletons and balls.
Anatomy nerds, expect to meet my skeleton (Mason) who will assist us in our shoulder related anatomy explorations.
And, “balls” you ask? Yes, we’ll be using the Yoga Tune Up® therapy balls as tools for self-massage on our shoulders and related areas to identify those “body blind spots” I talked about earlier.
We will compliment all of that with focused corrective exercises, functional movements and “out-of-the-box” asanas (classic yogic postures) that will help us penetrate through the superficial layers of the skin and into deep layers of fascia + connective tissues to relieve and target the:
- shoulder girdle
- rotator cuff
- and, the surrounding structures that support the entire shoulder joint
Like I said, this workshop is your guide to bulletproofing your shoulders.
You’ll learn easy + effective techniques to:
- prevent injuries and chronic pain
- roll-out tension, stress, stiffness, and pain
- tackle stability + mobility issues (creatively!)
- use breathing mechanics to support shoulder suppleness (when you don’t have you therapy balls) + help downregulate your state of mind from “all the things” of the daily grind
My goal is to help you see the true picture of your own shoulders movement (or lack there-of) and teach you the nuts and bolts of how to build upon what you have so you can improve your performance and remain (or work your way towards pain + injury-free shoulder movement.
